Able’s Discombobulation!
Able you have a strong interest in containing and today you were interested in containing water in your jug and the upright cylinder activity. You filled your jug with water and poured the water into the cylinder. You noticed that the water began to spray out of the holes in the sides of the cylinder. You immediately set about trying to block the holes to stop the water coming out. You found that you didn’t have enough fingers to block the holes and you looked about for something to help you. You found a ball and held it up to holes but it didn’t work. You then refilled your jug from the water run and came back to fill the cylinders. You watch as you poured the water into the cylinder telling me ‘getting higher’. As the water leaked out of the holes and the water disappeared you asked ‘where’s it gone now?’ ‘Where’s it gone?’
Able you then refilled your jug, you noticed the tube coming out of the barrel and asked ‘why’s it dripping?’ You went back to the cylinders and started to refill them, you held your foot under the spray and said ‘it tickle me!’ You turned your attention back to trying to block the holes in the cylinder, you used your whole hand, moving it up and down the cylinder. You then placed your whole hand inside the cylinder trying several of them, saying ‘no, no.’
So What?
Able, you had a working theory that you could contain the water in your jug and in the cylinder. You were discombobulated when the water didn’t stay contained. From your previous experiences you had assimilated that different containers could contain water. You had to accommodate new thinking when your water disappeared. The cylinders had tiny pin prick holes that you couldn’t see and you set about trying to stop your water coming out of them. You tried using your fingers, and then your whole hand, inside and outside of the cylinders to try and keep your water contained, developing new ways of thinking.
