Well-being and Involvement (Laevers, 1997)

This is a professional development opportunity which offers you the chance to think deeply about children’s emotional well-being and their engagement in learning. You will spend time considering video vignettes of young children and applying the theory to this video material, alongside colleagues on the course. You will engage in a professional dialogue about children’s emotional lives and their cognition, recognising when deep level learning is taking place. You will hone your skills in considering the environment that you are offering to children, and make considerations about how to improve it.

Maths and Science in the Early Years (Schemas)

Participants will be introduced to early patterns (schemas) that children repeat in order to develop conceptual understanding. A range of video vignettes will be used for participants to recognise children’s repeated patterns, develop an awareness of clusters of patterns and plan next steps for the children based on their schemas. A consideration will be given to resourcing of the environment to best support children’s mathematical and scientific development.

Action Research Micro-Project

9:00 am - 5:00 pm

This course is for education practitioners who would like to experience what it is like to undertake a practitioner-led research project and engage in collaborative inquiry.

You will be led through the stages of a practitioner-led research and collaborative inquiry project step-by-step, practising the methods they are asked to use in their assignments. Participants will be research collaborators and take turns in the roles of researcher and research subject.

Foundation Degree in Integrated Working with Children and Families in the Early Years (BR)

The Foundation Degree (Arts) in Integrated Working with Children and Families in the Early Years is an exciting entry into Higher Education, delivered at the Pen Green Research Base and endorsed by the University of Hertfordshire. This two year course has been designed for practitioners to build on their experience, develop their practice, and deepen their understanding of working with children and families in early years contexts.

Professional Development Visits to Pen Green are held once a month and may be booked for individuals or groups, tailored to suit you and your team.

The day can be programmed to support your continuous professional development or as an informal tour of the centre led by knowledgeable members of staff.

Making Children’s Learning Visible (MCLV)

The Making Children’s Learning Visible Project for staff in early childhood teams, draws on the work of Tobin et al (Preschool in Three Cultures, Yale University Press, 1989). It is aimed specifically at improving outcomes for the most vulnerable children and thereby narrowing the gap between the better off and the most disadvantaged.

Through this course you will analyse your pedagogy, develop a systematic assessment process for making children’s learning visible.  This can be shared with Ofsted to show children’s progress against the early learning goals and improve outcomes for the most vulnerable children.

Supervision and Support

This one day course is for all practitioner who lead and support staff members, students or volunteers who work with children and families.

Even when things are going well, there is a need to step away from day-to-day demands and review and reflect on practice. Supervision training can help combat these issues, and is essential for all practitioners who lead and support staff members, students or volunteers.

Parents’ Involvement in their Children’s Learning

This course is for all those working with children, either in the school system or early years sector As this is a strengths based approach it is suitable for all those working with children with SEND.

This is professional development which offers you an opportunity to work in an evidence based way, improving outcomes for children and families. This course is run over two separate days, with some project work undertaken between days one and two.

NCFE Cache Level 3 Early Years Educator

The Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Workforce (Early Years Educator) prepares learners to become Early Years Educators, enabling them to work with children from birth to 5 years and gain knowledge of children aged 5 to 7 years. Our part-time Level 3 route allows you to learn and gain a full and relevant qualification alongside work commitments.

Early Years Initial Teacher Training (EYITT)

Early Years Initial Teacher Training (EYITT) is teacher training focused on working with children across the birth to five age range. Early years teachers specialise in early childhood development and learning. Their expertise, knowledge and understanding helps to provide young children with the best start in early years settings and schools. As an Early Years Teacher you will be responsible for organising, delivering and leading practice in your own workplace, working closely with families and other professionals.

School Direct Initial Teacher Training – PGCE

The Pen Green Initial Teacher Training (ITT) course covers the 3 to 11 age range. All primary trainees are on a programme which trains them to teach ‘The Primary Phase’. Within this phase, Pen Green trainees are on the 3-7 pathway. All trainees are required to spend time (1 day minimum) in the age range before and after the age range they are experiencing in their school based training.

We have two routes to QTS, School Direct PGCE and School Direct Salaried. School Direct means that trainees spend the majority of their training year based in school, working and learning alongside qualified teachers who mentor and support them in school. Academic and pastoral support is also provided by tutors from Pen Green and the University of Hertfordshire. The University of Hertfordshire awards the academic qualifications and accredits the QTS of our trainee teachers.
