Pedagogical Interventions – Learning Alongside Each Other

Tristan you have shown a huge interest in elephants and all of your play has been based around this interest. Over the last few weeks we have enjoyed fact and fiction stories involving elephants. Your favourite one being “The Elephant and the Bad Baby”. We have used technology to google elephant facts and you have made your very own elephant book. You wanted to transform yourself into an elephant by having your face painted and then to finish of our week I came across this amazing elephant mask while out shopping and just knew I had to get it for you. I have loved following your interest as I now know a lot more interesting facts about elephants.

So what?

By supporting Tristan’s interest Tristan has had the opportunity to experience the following;

  • Find out about and retrieve information from fact and fiction books, google and Youtube.
  • He has found out about how things work by using the iPad, printer, hole punch to create his book.
  • He has explored his transformation schema through the use of facepaints and dressing up.

As adults, we interact with young children, in order to facilitate their learning when thinking about my pedagogical interactions with Tristan I reflected on what I did;

  • I know Tristan’s family experiences and links to what he has done previously.
  • I showed Tristan that I was interested by my facial expression, by mirroring his facial expression, by being physically close to him.
  • I encouraged Tristan to make choices and decisions.
  • I encouraged Tristan to go beyond what I knew and was open to learning alongside him.
  • I engaged with Tristan, encouraging his curiosity.
  • I acknowledged both Tristan’s feelings and his competence and capabilities.
