Harry the Architect – Constructing with the hot glue gun
Harry, you have a strong connection schema that I have observed in your block play so I planned this construction activity with the glue gun with you in mind. I explained to you about how to use the hot glue gun and keep yourself safe. Harry you weren’t too sure about using the glue gun by yourself and asked me to put the glue where you indicated. After a while you had the confidence to try it by yourself. You told me that you were making a ‘Duck House’. You had a clear plan in mind and you knew exactly where you wanted each piece of wood. At first you attached sticks around all of the edges of the piece of wood, then you made a doorway by carefully thinking about how to balance each piece of wood. As your building progressed you constructed support towers and you thought about how to add walls and a roof telling me you wanted to make it dark inside.
Harry you have a strong connection schema and all of your experiences have enabled you to think about and problem solve how to fit and connect different things together. In this activity you thought very carefully and problem solved how to manipulate and fit the blocks together to make your duck house. You tried out different approaches, for example working out the right size and number of blocks you needed to support the roof. Working with the glue gun was very satisfying for you as the effect was immediate and you were able to complete your whole building. Harry, you spent most of the morning session at this activity and your well being and involvement levels were high. Over the next few days you returned to make another duck house, refining the details and even adding a slide!
