Join us for this practical and reflective webinar exploring the foundations of early writing in the EYFS. Drawing on research, developmental understanding and real examples, this session will consider why writing is far more than pencil and paper — and why physical development, movement, relationships and enabling environments matter so deeply.
Together, we will explore:
- The significance of gross and fine motor development in preparing children for writing
- The links between physical development, communication and language, and literacy
- Common misconceptions and pitfalls around early writing practice
- How enabling environments can support purposeful mark-making and writing development
- The role of the adult in scaffolding, modelling and creating motivation for writing
- Practical ideas for supporting early writing both indoors and outdoors
The session will also reflect on the EYFS Early Learning Goals for Physical Development and Literacy, alongside approaches to observation and assessment that remain meaningful and child-centred.
Through discussion, reflection and examples from practice, this webinar aims to support practitioners in thinking differently about how children move into writing — building strong foundations that support confidence, engagement and long-term success.
