Foundation Degree Module - Self as Learner

Credits: 30

Level: 4

The aims of this module are to enable students to…

  • Be confident as adult learners and to use reflection in their regular practice.
  • To be active members of the Learning Community.

Adults learn in a variety of ways. This module aims to support those returning to study and those who are continuing into higher education to identify their own learning styles. You will have the opportunity to use your previous experiences and knowledge to support your developing self.

This module involves understanding the process of reflective practice, and the impact this has on an individual as a learner. You will be encouraged to take an aspect of your practice, reflect on it, consider implications for future practice and draw on relevant theory and literature to support your ideas.

For some students this may be the first time they have engaged in higher level study. The module will support the development of the skills and attributes required to successfully complete a piece of academic writing.

This module is assessed through coursework (pass/fail).

The expectation is that students attend all scheduled learning and teaching sessions.

If there are exceptional circumstances which result in a student being unable to fulfil this, the student should discuss these with the Course Lead.

Programme/module requirements, including those attendance, must be met and students are responsible for making good work missed through absence.

You will be introduced to a range of self-assessment tools, and will be supported to develop the skills required for effective study and communication. You will be developing the skills of giving and receiving feedback with a view to understanding the value of action planning in a realistic but challenging manner. Using resources such as StudyNet and the library facilities on-site you will become skilled in selecting appropriate evidence and reading material from a range of sources. Engaging in discussion about your professional development and previous experiences with peers and colleagues will enable you to feel confident in yourself as learners and as an Early Years professional.

The study week will enable you to become fully immersed in the module. Each day will follow on from the previous one with time for reflection planned in so as to embed the idea of continuously reflecting on practice and knowledge.

Access will be readily available to IT equipment and resources that will enable the students to access any online library resources. You will have a named tutor for this module and individual tutorial time will be made to ensure the successful completion of the module.
