The aims of this module are to enable students to…

• Work effectively within a team and to take personal responsibility for the development of high quality practice.
• Be able to lead effectively
• Explore and discuss values and beliefs about leadership
• Use focus group as a method of enquiry

In this module you will consider aspects of managing and leading practice. You have the opportunity to explore and develop your understanding of management and leadership theory. Time will be spent exploring your leadership and management skills through the writing of a reflective accounts. The module will introduce you to the relevance of group theory. You will apply theoretical knowledge to your practice.  You will be introduced to the psychology of change and how indivduals respond when dealing with change.

This module is assessed on coursework (pass/fail).

The expectation is that students attend all scheduled learning and teaching sessions.

If there are exceptional circumstances which result in a student being unable to fulfill this, the student should discuss these with the Course Lead.

Programme/module requirements, including those attendance, must be met and students are responsible for making good work missed through absence.

• Know and understand the concept of ‘Leaderful’ behaviour.
• Know and understand management and leadership theory and be able to apply theory to their own experiences within their teams.
• Know and understand group dynamics.

• Know and understand how to assess and critique their own capability, including the use of feedback to reflect on own actions, thoughts and feelings, and a review of their personal learning.
• Know and understand how to write and work in an ethical manner.

Scheduled Teaching, campus−based activities in general teaching spaces (e.g.lectures, 20 seminars, tutorials) 22 hours

Scheduled campus−based activities in specialist teaching spaces (e.g practical classes, 25 workshops, demonstrations) 10 hours

Directed independent study 68 hours

Self-directed independent study 200 hours

Leadership and management theory will be explored during the study week. You will be encouraged to consider your skills in managing and leading a team. Access to relevant reading resources will be provided. Plenty of opportunities will be created to share perspectives with other professionals during the study week.
