The aims of this module are to enable students to:

• Draw on knowledge of leadership in early years, to support critical reflection on their own leadership.
• Articulate the vision, values and principles that underpin their own practice and the practice in their setting.
• Develop their capacity to lead, coach and supervise professional practice within their setting.

Knowledge and Understanding:

On successful completion of this programme a student will:

• Gain a systematic understanding of leadership.
• Critically analyse the effect of change on individuals and teams.
• Consider change processes for their settings.
• Demonstrate their understanding of the purposes of supervision and coaching of professional practice.

Intellectual, practical and transferable skills:

On successful completion of this programme a student will be able to:

• Work effectively within a team and/or with others, demonstrating leadership skills and qualities.
• Act as a mentor, coach or supervisor to others, offering constructive feedback.
• Adopt a continuous cycle of evaluation, critical reflection, planning and implementing change in order to improve practice.

In this module you will be involved in considering aspects of leading practice in the early years. You will be expected to work with your team and/or others to facilitate change and reflect on the effectiveness of the changes. Consideration will be given to how the changes become embedded in your own practice and the practice in your setting.

You will develop your understanding of the purpose of supervision and coaching of professional practice and develop your skills as a supervisor, coach and mentor. Throughout the module you will be exploring theories to support this.

The module will draw on a range of teaching and learning methods, including occasional lectures and seminars, individual and small group work, videos, case study and practical workshops.

You will undertake a work-focused assignment to critically reflect on your leadership and generate ideas for developing your practice. Students will be offered tutorial support.

This module is assessed through coursework – written assignment.

 The expectation is that students attend all scheduled learning and teaching sessions.

If there are exceptional circumstances which result in a student being unable to fulfil this, the student should discuss these with the Course Lead.

Programme/module requirements, including those attendance, must be met and students are responsible for making good work missed through absence.
