SUMMARY:Pen Green Annual Conference 2026
DESCRIPTION:Relational Pedagogies: Trusting the Child and Knowing Yourself \nA Fully Funded East Midlands Early Years Stronger Practice Hub Conference \nJoin us for an inspiring day exploring how relationships\, kindness\, play and self-reflection can transform educational practice and strengthen outcomes for children. \nBringing together two of the most influential voices in relational education\, Dave Whitaker and Greg Bottrill\, this conference will explore how emotionally intelligent leadership\, authentic relationships and child-centred pedagogy create the conditions for children and adults to thrive. \nDave Whitaker’s work on The Kindness Principle challenges us to place relationships at the heart of leadership\, behaviour and inclusion. Greg Bottrill’s emerging work on Inner Child-Led Pedagogy invites educators to reconnect with their own sense of wonder and curiosity\, ensuring children remain at the centre of educational experiences. Together\, their perspectives offer a compelling vision for relational practice in today’s educational landscape. \nThroughout the day\, delegates will hear keynote presentations from both speakers\, take part in opportunities for reflection and discussion\, explore inspiring learning environments\, and join a panel conversation examining what relational pedagogy looks like in practice. \nThis conference is for early years practitioners\, teachers\, school leaders\, childminders\, family support professionals and anyone passionate about creating environments where children feel safe\, connected\, valued and able to flourish.

SUMMARY:How to Write Meaningful Observations
DESCRIPTION:How to Write Meaningful Observations\nMany practitioners tell us that observation\, assessment\, and planning can feel overwhelming — especially when there’s pressure to record learning rather than truly understand it. \nThis online practice clinic\, led by highly experienced nursery practitioners\, is designed to help you slow down\, think deeply\, and make sense of what you notice in children’s play and everyday activity. \nRather than focusing on formats or paperwork\, we’ll work together to explore how thoughtful observation can meaningfully inform teaching and practice.

SUMMARY:Schema and Maths Network
DESCRIPTION:This network explores how schema theory can support meaningful mathematical learning experiences for young children and how practitioners can use children’s schematic interests to inform planning\, environments and interactions. Together\, we consider how recognising and responding to schemas can deepen children’s engagement with mathematical concepts through play\, movement\, exploration and relationships. \nThe aim of this network is to provide support in using schema theory to inform maths planning and help embed this approach across your team.

SUMMARY:Webinar Ramping Up Maths: See the Possibilities in Play
DESCRIPTION:Friday 18 September 2026 | 11.30am–1pm | Online via Microsoft Teams \nDiscover the maths hiding in everyday play\nChildren love making things move\, and ramps are a perfect invitation for exploration. But ramp play is much more than just fun – it can provide rich opportunities for mathematical thinking\, problem solving and reasoning in the early years. \nJoin us for this engaging webinar from Young Minds Big Maths\, a collaboration between early years educators and university mathematicians in the North East. \nTogether\, we’ll explore how simple ramp play can support children to predict\, experiment\, test ideas\, solve problems and explore cause and effect. \nYou’ll gain practical insights\, see real examples from the free Ramp Play booklet and explore strategies for recognising and deepening the maths within children’s everyday play – leaving you inspired to see maths in motion.

SUMMARY:Baby Room Network - Virtual Visit
DESCRIPTION:For our next Baby Room Network\, we’ll be doing something a little different and taking a virtual visit into the Pen Green baby room. \nWe’ll explore the environment together\, sharing the thinking behind how spaces\, activities and resources have been set up and how these respond to the current interests and fascinations of the children. \nThere will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions\, share ideas and reflect together on how thoughtful environments can support babies’ play\, exploration and learning.
